Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions From Parents:

What will my child do in Health & Fitness classes?
First of all, your child will learn about how their body works and how to make it work better. To accomplish this, we play a lot of fun games that deliver intentional learning content. For example, a popular game like "Capture the Flag" is known to our students as "Deliver the Oxygen". When our students play this game, they learn that all muscles need oxygen to move. Students run to the lungs and take as much oxygen back to their muscle as possible.

Your child is also going to learn a variety of motor skills. We know that the more competent your child is at throwing, catching, kicking and striking, then the more likely your child is to be active. Plus it's fun to learn and practice these skills. We introduce and build on these skills during warm ups, club card time and during sports-related units.

Finally, your child is going to learn why it's important to practice healthy habits. They are going to review and learn the latest research about nutrition and obesity. Click here to learn more about some of the activities we do in H&F.

Will my kid play Dodgeball?
No. We do not play dodgeball in H&F class. That's old school PE stuff! We will however learn some basics of how to throw and catch, and we will play games that involve both skills. The difference is that our version will incorporate some valuable learning concepts and include non-human targets.

Is my child required to wear special PE clothes?
No specific clothes are required. However, it is helpful to wear clothes that allow for comfortable movement (sweats, warm up pants, etc.). Also, students should try to wear athletic shoes on H&F days. Crocks and boots are not ideal as they can actually cause students to trip and fall. Instead, rubber soled shoes that fit snug around the heel work best.

How much Health & Fitness time does my child get?
This year all students receive 70 minutes of Health & Fitness per week. That is not nearly enough time (WA. state requirement is 100 minutes per week), but we are working to increase this in the future.

How do we know what is coming up in Health & Fitness Classes?
You can click here to see our monthly newsletters and learn more about specific class information and volunteer opportunities.

Is Mr. Millsap as crazy as my kid says he is?
Sometimes! It is true that we have a lot of fun and share some fun stories. I just ask students to try to retell the stories accurately. Remember, it does work both ways...Your child shares interesting things about you from time to time!

Frequently Asked Questions From Students:

When are my Health & Fitness days?
This year you will get two scheduled Health & Fitness days. Click here to see your class schedule. Remember that you should always be allowed to attend your scheduled H&F class. You cannot be held back because of class work, behavior problems or any other reason.

When will we play games?
We will try to play games in H&F whenever possible. Sometimes we will play games during warm ups or as our main activity. We will also try to offer "Dessert" at the end of each class. "Dessert" is simply some kind of fun treat at the end. It might be a game, a fun video, a special smoothie, etc...

Do we play sports like soccer and basketball?
Yes. We will often rotate between playing a sport activity for a week and then focusing on a health-related unit for a week or so. Some of the sport units that we try to cover are : Soccer, Basketball, Hockey and Football. We will also try to play Volleyball and some other net sports this year.

Frequently Asked Questions From Teachers:

Can I have a student sit out of H&F to make up classroom work?
Technically, no. I understand that emergency situations arise, and I will work with you to make sure that child finishes necessary work. Please know that our students are already not meeting State minutes in H&F, so we want to make sure they are in the gym as much as possible.  I can also partner with you in other ways to assist with behavior issues or other areas of concern.

Can my class earn extra H&F time?
Yes. I love to have class helpers. I also love to use extra H&F time as an incentive for your students. Often, I cannot see your whole class at one time because of spatial concerns, but I am happy to work out a system to see some of your kids for extra time during the week.
