Let's Move! January's highlights in the Hive include practicing motor skills like: shooting a basketball, double dutch jumping, soccer dribbling, volleyball bumping and much more. We'll also take a closer look at earlier fitness data and set realistic, measurable, personal goals. Speaking of goals, so far we have 43% of our 5th graders at standard on the mile run. Remember, minimum standard for boys is 9:30 and girls is 10:00 or faster. Click here for more details. Also, be sure to see this month's homework for extra cardio practice!

NUTRITION-THE INGREDIENTS 4 LIFEMyPlate.jpgheavyjumprope.jpg
Healthy eating is the key to performing better, both physically and academically. Over the next two weeks, you will learn more about the foods that you put in your body. What are calories? How many do we need? What foods provide the most nutrient-rich calories? How do you read food labels? These are just a few of the learning targets that we will cover over the next 4 lessons. Our nutrition unit will culminate with a special "smoothie day". All students will get to taste fresh fruits and vegetables in a fun and creative way.

BAGLEY ON BIKESbike11.jpegheavyjumprope.jpg

Bicycle and pedestrian safety is the main theme in H&F this month. All students, K-5th, will receive three, 35-minute bike lessons that emphasize safe riding habits on the back playground. Learning goals include: 1. How to properly wear a helmet and other safety checks to consider before you ride. 2. Basic hand signals and other “Rules of the Road”. 3. Strategies to becoming a defensive rider!  Plenty of bikes and helmets will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own. Also, following this unit, students can take part in our DB Bike Loan Program. This program allows all students to continue to work on their riding skills at home and in the community during the school year. Thanks for all the bike donations and to all the volunteers for making this unit a huge success for our kids!

Over 3,000 Tests...Almost Done! 3.JPEG

This month students are performing fitness tests in H&F. Each test is designed to assess a specific area of overall fitness (cardio-mile run, muscle strength-push ups, muscle endurance-curl ups, flexibility-sit & reach & body composition-height check). Students in 2nd-5th grades will also take two skill tests (2 minute jump roping and 2 minute juggling).

There are three important goals to administering these tests to kids. 1) Students will understand what each test is designed to target and why each of these 5 parts of fitness is important to overall health. 2) Students will be able to identify personal strengths and areas for improvement after completing assessments. 3) Students will use this data to set personal goals for future testing.

While these tests can provide valuable data, they can also be quite time consuming with almost 400 kids. We are almost done kids!! Thanks to all volunteers, including parents, teachers and "big kids" who have helped along the way.
